The Blueprint to Career Fulfillment? đź‘€

Reverse engineering your work and financial life

Hey y’all.

Super excited to share this week’s newsletter with you. This week’s tip single-handedly changed my career two years ago, and it might do the same for you.

Reverse Engineer Your Financial and Work Life

Most people pick their careers like this:

  1. What do I like?

  2. What jobs include doing that?

  3. How much does that role pay?

  4. How can I live my best life within the bounds of that salary?

Here’s what I did instead, and what works even better:

  1. What does my ideal life look like?

  2. How much money do I need to make to support that lifestyle?

  3. What jobs pay that much?

  4. Of those jobs, which interests me most?

Why does this work? Your interests are bound to change (especially if you’re a multi-passionate person). If you start with your interests, it’s easy to end up either (A) disliking what you do, or (B) not making enough to enjoy your life the way you want to.

But if you work backwards, you’ll likely end up with a career that (A) allows you to afford the life you want and (B) gives you work you at least somewhat enjoy. (This is a solid approach for people who don’t want to turn their passion into their full-time role.)

If you’re feeling stuck in your career, or if you aren’t sure where to take it, try working backwards to find work that matches both your ideal financial future and work life.

Helpful Resources

Designing Your Life is a great book to dive into. It teaches you how to build a life you can thrive in, regardless of what stage you’re at in life currently. One of my favorite quotes from the book says it all: “Designers don’t think their way forward. Designers build their way forward.” 🫳🎤

What I’m Thinking About

Ramit Sethi, a financial author and creator (we’ll talk about him more next week), promotes this idea of “finding your Rich Life.” The Rich Life is all about what makes you happiest — it could be the ability to shop at Erewhon without having to worry about the cost, being able to splurge on a $500 purse, or taking your family on yearly vacations.

Think about it: What does your rich life look like?

And if you aren’t sure, take his free 1-hour course on Designing Your Rich Life.

See ya next week,
